Big Bend National Park, tucked into the bend of the Rio Grande River in far West Texas, is one of the most unlikely places for beauty to dwell. And in truth, it is a different sort of beauty: much of its desert more moonscape than earthscape. Rocky and inaccessible, it is filled with crags and rattlesnakes and javalina. it seems an unwelcoming sort of place. But for those with eyes to witness, beautiful it is, particularly in mornings and evenings when the low, clear light sets a torch to the earth, and a blaze of colors seems to rise from the rocks themselves. For landscape painters, Big Bend should be a mecca. It has always been so for me.
In many of my paintings from Big Bend it is the huge sky I seek to capture. At night, the stars are so crowded and bright I myself being pushed to the ground. In my art, I hope to reflect the largeness of the landscape, especially the sky.
